On Friday, October 15th, 2010, the Acton Institute announced Springfield Catholic High School as a 2010 recipient of the Catholic High School Honor Roll, an annual award that honors excellence among Catholic high schools nationwide.

Nearly 1,300 high schools across the country were eligible. The Acton Institute, based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a not-for-profit research and educational organization. The Catholic high School Honor Roll is a nationally recognized award given by the advisory board which consists of presidents from Gonzaga University, Creighton University, De Sales University and the University of Notre Dame, among others. Being recognized nationally as TOP 50 is a validation of the quality of education that Springfield Catholic High School provides.

Springfield Catholic is among only 50 schools in the United States selected bi-annually and a first time recipient of the award. Last year Springfield Catholic High School ranked in the Top 60 category. Springfield Catholic, which opened in 1916, was among 14 new Top 50 honorees this year.

Springfield Catholic officials will announce the award Friday at 2:00 PM in the school’s gymnasium. The announcement will be followed by an all‐school celebration and press conference.

“This honor is received with profound appreciation to the school’s teachers, parents, student body, and supporters,” said Dr. Tim Dilg, Principal of Springfield Catholic High School. “It is their determination and their devotion that have made Springfield Catholic a school of unique distinction.”

The Honor Roll, an independent project of the Acton Institute (http://www.acton.org/), recognizes and encourages excellence in Catholic secondary education. It is a critical resource for parents and educators, honoring schools that excel in three categories:

  • Academic excellence
  • Catholic identity
  • Civic education

Honorees range from newcomer schools such as Springfield Catholic to repeat honorees such as All Hallows High School in the Bronx and Brother Rice High School in Chicago.

“Being named one of the Top 50 high schools in the nation not only highlights Springfield Catholic’s excellent curriculum and our commitment to building Catholic identity, but affirms what is most essential in our mission as a Catholic high school,” said Dr. Dilg.

Speakers included: Monsignor Tom Reidy; Dr. Amy Demelo, Director of Schools; Dr. Tim Dilg, Principal; Greg Burris, City Manager;
